Chronology of Principal Royal Visits to British Columbia

1882

Marquess of Lorne visits in his capacity as Governor General of Canada. His wife Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, accompanied him.

October 1901

Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, later King George V and Queen Mary visit as part of a cross Canada tour.

1912, 1915

Visits by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, who is acting as Governor General of Canada from 1911-1916. Prince Arthur was a son of Queen Victoria.

1919

Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, visits B.C. as part of a two month tour of Canada.

1926

Prince George, later Duke of Kent, visits the West Coast. George was the son of George V.

1927

Edward, Prince of Wales, and his brother, Prince George, tour Canada for the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation.

1939

Tour of Canada by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. First visit to Canada by a reigning sovereign.

1940-1946

Earl of Athlone, married to Princess Alice, visits in his capacity as Governor General. Princess Alice was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

1951

Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip tour Canada.

1954

Prince Philip attends the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver.

1958

Princess Margaret tours B.C. for the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Colony of British Columbia. Visits Fort St. John, Comox, Courtenay, Fort Langley, Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, Victoria, Vancouver, Abbotsford, Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon, Penticton and Chilliwack.

1959

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip tour Canada.

1962

Prince Philip attends the 2nd Commonwealth Study Conference in Vancouver.

1962

Princess Mary, the Princess Royal, visits Victoria and Vancouver. Princess Mary was the daughter of George V and aunt to the Queen.

1967

Princess Alexandra (granddaughter of George V and cousin to the Queen) visits Vancouver and Victoria.

1971

The Queen and Prince Philip, accompanied by Princess Anne, tour B.C. to celebrate the province’s 100th anniversary of entry into Confederation. They visit Victoria, Vancouver, Tofino, Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Williams Lake and Comox.

1978

Prince Philip and Prince Andrew visit as part of a tour which includes the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.

1979

Semi-official visit by Prince Charles to Victoria.

1980

Semi-official visit by Prince Charles to Victoria and Vancouver as President of the International Council of United World College.

1980

Visit by Princess Alexandra to Victoria and Nanaimo.

1983

Visits by the Queen and Prince Philip to Victoria, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Vernon, Kamloops, and New Westminster as part of a North American west coast tour.

1986

Western Canadian tour by Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Visits to Victoria, Vancouver (Expo ’86), Prince George, Kamloops and Nanaimo.

1986

Princess Margaret attends Expo ’86.

1987

The Queen and Prince Philip visit Vancouver, Victoria and Esquimalt.

1989

Visit by Princess Alexandra to Victoria.

1991

Prince Edward visits Vancouver and Victoria as part of Commonwealth Games preparation.

1993

Prince Edward visits Vancouver (Duke of Edinburgh Awards) and Victoria (Commonwealth Games preparation).

1994

The Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Edward visit Victoria to attend the Commonwealth Games. The Queen officially opened the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George. Prince Edward visits Kelowna.

1999

Prince Edward visits Vancouver for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
