The white house in the middle of this picture is where we lived.

Mother made many watercolour paintings of the new land we called home, and sent them to our friends and family back in England. My mother drew pictures of Fort Victoria.

The fort was built by the Hudson's Bay Company. This company made its business by trading in furs such as beaver pelts.

Mother also drew pictures of the First Nations people in the area. She thought they were interesting to look at, but found their ways very different from the ways she was used to back in England.
