Pentrelew: Our Family Home

We finally found a house to live in again when a friend of my father's sold us his house and furniture. My family worked hard to build more rooms on to the house. In December, just before the house was finished, we had a fire and it burned down.

But that didn't stop us from trying again!

Four years later we built a new house right where the old house burnt down.

We named our new house "Pentrelew". It was a big and busy place. We later added more rooms to the house. There were two kitchens and eleven bedrooms. Friends and relatives would come and visit, and there was room for everyone!

Servants did all the cooking and cleaning for our family. Most of the servants were people from China who had come to British Columbia looking for work and opportunities just like we had.

Many Chinese families,
such as the Lee Mong Kow family
immigrated to B.C.

Chinese families often found prosperity by starting their own businesses.
