Chinese Community

From 1880 to 1910, Victoria's Chinatown grew in size and population. In its heyday in 1911, Chinatown housed 3,458 people and covered six city blocks.

Many buildings in Chinatown served more than one purpose. Many had businesses on the main floor, offices on the second floor, and residences on the top floor.

The Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association was an organization that resolved disputes within the Chinese community, and represented the Chinese community as a whole.

The Chinese community built their own school in 1909, because the community wanted their children to learn their own languages.
