First Nations in B.C.

This gallery presents images of historical First Nations life including clothing, housing, food gathering and preparation. It contains video clips of historical films of First Nations people from the BC Archives’ collections.


Classroom Activities

  • Choose one of Harlan Smith's moving image clips. Research and explain:

    a)  What is ocurring in the clip

    b)  Why this activity was important to the First Nations way of life.

  • Focus on Skills:

    - Select and summarize information from primary and secondary print and non-print sources, including electronic sources

  • Debate the positive and negative features of contact between the First Nations and European people.

  • Focus on Skills:

    - Defend a position on a controversial issue after considering a variety of perspectives.

  • On a map of British Columbia, indicate the general regions in which each of the major groups of First Nations lived. Where possible also indicate the language spoken by each group, and their main sources of food.

  • Focus on Skills:

    - construct, interpret, and use graphs, tables, grids, scales, legends, contours and various types of maps.
