NEW PROVINCIAL ARCHIVIST APPOINTED - 28 October 1998


Mr. Gary Mitchell
Acting Provincial Archivist Gary Mitchell has been appointed to head the British Columbia Archives, Andrew Petter, minister responsible for the Information, Science and Technology Agency, announced today.

"Mr. Mitchell was the clear winner in the selection process," said Petter. "Since he has acted in the position for the last seven months, the transition will be seamless. His appointment as Provincial Archivist will also help ensure the preservation and integrity of the province's documentary heritage."

Mitchell was chosen unanimously by a panel of four people including a representative from the Archives Association of BC. Mitchell, a career public servant, has been Deputy Provincial Archivist managing the province's archives program for the past seven years.

"My new role is vital for ensuring accountability and for supporting understandings and interpretations of British Columbia through the management and retention of its personal, corporate and social memory," said Mitchell.

"Under Mr. Mitchell's stewardship, the BC Archives has also developed a world-renowned web site that often has 30,000 hits a day," said Petter. "This use of modern technology to bring the Archives to people around the world shows that Mr. Mitchell is innovative and creative and I have great confidence that the history of this province is in excellent hands."

Mitchell grew up in Langley BC, has a master of archival studies from the University of BC and is the first graduate of the program to head a major Canadian archives. He has the international designation of certified records manager and is a member of the Archives Association of BC, the Association of Canadian Archivists, and the Association of Commonwealth Archivists and Records Managers.

As Provincial Archivist, Mitchell chairs the Public Documents Committee, is senior spokesperson on archival issues and archives within the province and often fills the role of provincial historian. He also has responsibilities under the Document Disposal Act and stewardship over the community archives assistance grants program.
