Conclusion

The Queen’s visit in October 2002 is her first to the province in this century. As the records available at the Archives demonstrate, an enormous amount of work is being done in preparation. For the tour planners, there will be little rest until the Royal Visit is successfully completed and a part of our history. One weary government official exclaimed in a letter that he wrote just before the arrival of the King and Queen in 1939: "Personally, I am so fed up with the tremendous amount of detail that I don’t care whether I see them or not." (GR-0155 Reel B08469).

Fortunately, most British Columbians will be able to enjoy the pageantry of the October events without having to participate in the planning, and can review the archival record of this state visit at their leisure one day in the future. And there will be some who can say proudly, as the Victoria Colonist reported on June 1, 1939 after the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, "I was there".

We hope that you enjoy this exhibition and have learned more about the monarchy in Canada and the special relationship that the Royal Family has with our province and its people.

This exhibit was researched and produced by staff at the British Columbia Archives with the assistance of volunteers Dennis Flewelling (of the Friends of the BC Archives) and Jocelyn Gallagher.
