Search and Browse points are used to limit searching or browsing only to specific parts of the entries (descriptions, records or documents) that make up the index. In various other systems and software, they are also possibly known as index fields within a database, access points, or indexed fields, limits, and sometimes even indexes. Subject, Author, Title are common examples of Search Points.
This search point consists of the complete content within the entry, i.e. all of the text within the description or record contained in the index. This is the default search point for the Basic Search Gateway, and also available as a specific search point under the Advanced Search Gateway.
Contains the name of the photographer or artist who created the record.
Contains the names of producing and sponsoring companies, production personnel, and cast members. Personal names are indexed as both surname, given name and given names surname.
Contains the name(s) of the author or authors of the publication.
Contains the same content as the creatorauthor searchpoint, except all the words within this browse point are listed as a single long phrase. Only available through the Browse function.
This field contains the title of the entry.
Contains the title of the group of records described.
Contains the title or caption of the photograph or painting.
Contains the title and alternate title(s) of the film, video, or sound recording described, and the title of the film, television, or radio series to which it belongs.
Contains the title of the publication.
Contains the same content as the title searchpoint, except all the words within this search point are listed as a single long phrase. Only available through the Browse function.
Contains standardized subject terms that apply to a particular entry.
Contains the same content as the subject searchpoint, except all the words within this browse point are listed as a single long phrase. Only available through the Browse function.
This field contains the call number or reference number that the record should be cited by. The call numbers that are highlighted in green are the preferred numbers to be used or cited.
This is the Registration Number that was assigned to the record by the Vital Statistics Agency at the time of registration.
For search purposes, this field is only useful if you know the exact registration number and correct format. It is included on the search form for use by Vital Statistics Agency and BC Archives staff, therefore it is normally best to leave this field blank.
Contains the call numbers that specify a particular physical item, as well as the number assigned to a particular description. Moving image call numbers always begin with an F (for film) or a V (for video), followed by a four-digit year, a colon, and a two-digit base number (except for 1980 film accession, which have three-digit base numbers). Moving image description numbers comprise the letters AAAA followed by four digits. Examples:
AAAA1185 is the description number for Lady of the lake
F1983:02/20 is the call number for the film original of Lady of the lake
V1993:03/6.1 item #2 is the call number for the video master of Lady of the lake
Contains the call numbers that specify a particular sound recording, as well as the number assigned to a particular description. Sound recording call numbers always begin with the letters T (for tape) or SD (for sound disc), followed by a four-digit base number, a colon, and a four-digit item number. (Exception: School broadcast tapes in collection T4022 have, following the colon, a two-digit year, a slash, and four digits that serve as an item number.) Sound recording description numbers comprise the letters AAAB or AAAC, followed by four digits.
Contains the names of places that are shown in the film or video item.
Contains the names of the places where the item was recorded, produced, broadcast, or published.
In this field you may enter the name of any city, town, municipality, district, or Indian Reserve in British Columbia. Some place names in British Columbia have changed over time. The event place names on the registrations, and in this index, are the ones that were used at the time of the registration of the event. For some early place names it may be necessary to consult atlases and gazetteers for the names used during the dates in question.
The most common event place names for the "overseas" deaths during World War Two are: "at sea", "overseas", and "unknown". Alternatively, try a search using the Match Any option on the country name for those killed in action on land, or leave the event place field blank.
The event place for Colonial Marriages and Baptisms often includes the name of the church or parish (e.g., St. Marys), the neighbourhood (e.g., James Bay), or the building (e.g., The Manse or Dr. Trimble's House) in which the marriage was solemnized or baptism performed. Event place is displayed as a combination of that specific place within the larger geographic district. The two levels of place name are separated by a comma. Where a marriage location is NOT stated in the original record, the place name is repeated (e.g., New Westminster, New Westminster).

Indicates whether the record has a digital image available and linked to the record that describes the photograph or painting.
Contains the title of the published series.
Contains the same content as the seriesinfo searchpoint, except all the words within this browse point are listed as a single long phrase. Only available through the Advanced Browse screen.
Contains the both the given names and surname. All the words within this browse point are listed as a single long phrase. Each Full Name is stored twice, once as [Surname, Given Names] and once as [Given Names Surname]. Only available through the Advanced Browse screen.
You may enter any surname (last name) in this search point. The name may be searched on its own or in combination with a given name or any other fields. Searching by a very common surname, such as Smith, without restricting the search by some other criteria will result in a large number of matches. Over time, surnames with an apostrophe (e.g., O'Brien) and/or several parts (e.g., St. James or de Boer) were entered into the Vital Statistics Agency databases with different punctuation and spacing. For such names, omit apostrophes, periods, hyphens and/or spaces (e.g., OBrien, StJames, deBoer, etc.).
For Baptisms, it contains only the surname of the person being baptised, and the aboriginal name if it exists.
You may enter one or more given names in this search point. The system allows you to search on a given name without a surname or other criteria, but the number of matches retrieved will likely be too large to be useful. It is most useful to search given names in combination with surnames and/or some other field that will limit the number of matches retrieved. In some years, the indexes recorded only one given name. To find "Peter John Smith", you may have to search for both "John Smith" and "Peter Smith".
Over the years, stillborn babies were recorded sometimes with birth registrations and sometimes with death registrations, usually indicated by the letters "SB" in the given name field and an age of "0". For some years, stillborn babies were registered in a separate record series which has not yet been microfilmed.
For Baptisms, it contains only the given names of the person being baptised, and the aboriginal name if it exists.
These four search points contain the same information as Surname, and Given Names, but are further differentiated by bride and groom.

Contains the gender of the person related to the registration, it will be either male, female or blank if unknown.
Specifying an age at death in the search criteria will speed up the search process, especially if the surname is quite common. If you know a person's approximate age at death, but not the exact age, it is a good idea to limit the search by specifying "greater than" or "less than" an age. For example, if you are certain that a person died when between 65 and 70 years of age, use the greater than option and enter 60 or use the range option and enter 60 TO 75 in the search criteria.
In the search results, age "unknown" indicates the age of the decedent was unknown. Age "0" is shown for children who died before their first birthday.
Contains the dates of production, copyright, release, or broadcast, etc., generally of the form 25-Nov-1981 (Day-Month-Year). Normally it is possible to search for a specific year, e.g. to search on 1981 just use 1981. This searchpoint does NOT include the accession or deposit dates.
Contains the dates of recording, production, broadcast, copyright, publication, etc., generally in the format 1956-06-18 (Year-Month-Day). This searchpoint does NOT include the accession or deposit dates.
Contains the full date of the event in numeric form, e.g. 1924 1 19 (Yr/Mo/Day)
In this search point you may enter any year that is likely to have occured in (see the release dates for Vital Event Genealogy Index information). You may also enter a range of years, for example 1872 TO 1910. You may use this search point on its own to retrieve all deaths for a particular year, or range of years, or in combination with other search points. Note: ranges must be entered in the form of number TO number.
For Baptisms, this is the year of the baptism event, not the year of birth.
In this search point you may enter any number from 1 to 12 representing the months of the year. You may use this on its own to retrieve all deaths for a particular month but be careful, you will retrieve a very large number of matches. It is best used in combination with other criteria.
In this search point you may enter any number from 1 to 31 for the day of the month. You may use this on its own to retrieve all deaths for a particular day of the month but be careful, you will retrieve a very large number of matches. It is best used in combination with other criteria.
Contains the type of Genealogy record for that index, e.g. Vital Event Birth, Vital Event Marriage, Vital Event Death, Baptism etc
This contains both the number BC Archives assigned to the microfilm reel containing the registration record, and the number given to the microfilm reel by the Genealogy Society of Utah (GSU) for use in its Family History Centres throughout the world.
This search poing is only useful if you know the exact BC Archives microfilm number. It is included on the search form for use by Vital Statistics Agency and BC Archives staff. It is best to leave this field blank.
This field can be used to retrieve registrations contained on a particular reel of microfilm or range of microfilm reels. With most search options, the search will retrieve only the registrations included on the BC Archives microfilm reel with the exact number match. Greater Than option will match all registrations included on BC Archives microfilm reels with numbers higher than the number entered. Less Than will match all registrations included on BC Archives microfilm reels with numbers lower than the number entered.
Choosing the range option allows you to search for all the registrations found on a range of microfilm reels. Note: ranges must be entered in the form of number TO number.
