Frederick Victor Longstaff

Frederick Victor Longstaff was born June 15th 1879 in Ben
Rhydding, Ilkley, England. He was educated at Eton and
Cambridge, and came to Canada in 1909 as a machine gun
instructor seconded to the Canadian Active Militia. He
settled in Victoria in 1911 where he practiced as an
architectural draughtsman, in which capacity he was involved
in the design of Saint John's, Quadra Street and the James
Bay Anglican Hall. From 1921 until his death he devoted
himself entirely to historical and geographical studies,
publishing works on naval, local and ecclesiastical history.
Longstaff died in Victoria in 1961.
Jennie Long McCulloch Longstaff was born in Stratford,
Ontario on July 5th 1879. She came to Victoria with her
parents in 1885. She joined the staff of the King's Printer
and rose to the position of Chief Clerk. In 1913 she became
active in the Alpine Club of Canada where she met Frederick
Victor Longstaff; they married in 1921. After marriage she
retired and devoted her time to various cultural interests.
She died in Victoria in 1957.
Records include: diaries, 1897-1961, correspondence, subject
files, scrapbooks and household accounts. The collection
reflects Longstaff's interest in military affairs, naval
history, mountaineering, the Anglican Church, various youth
organizations and the history of British Columbia in
general.
Approximately 1,200 photographs of ships, mountains, family,
and a world cruise of the Empress of Britain were
transferred to Visual Records accession 198504-1. The
photographs are arranged alphabetically as organized by
Longstaff. Other photographs are in accession 198001-2.
Maps were registered as M889132. A list of maps from the
Longstaff collection is available in Map documentation file
M856030, also known as finding aid CM/Z43. Please request

Annotated copy of A Gazetteer of British Columbia, ca. 1913,
is available in BC Archives unprocessed manuscript
accession, 87-26. Related records available at the
University of Victoria Archives and Special Collections,
SC069, and the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, L816 and
L1221.
